Members of the UPEI campus community who are eligible to vote in the upcoming federal election may cast their vote by special ballot from April  13 to 16 in the Student Day Lounge, W.A. Murphy Student Centre.

Voters will need to bring ID in order to vote. Go to  ID to vote for more information. Voters will vote for a candidate in the riding where their  place of ordinary residence  is located. While the Elections Canada “Vote on Campus” program is primarily aimed at students, any member of the community is welcome to vote at this special polling station.

The Vote on Campus hours of operation at UPEI are

  • Sunday, April 13, 12:00 to 4:00 pm
  • Monday, April  14, 9:00 am to 9:00 pm
  • Tuesday, April  15, 9:00 am to 9:00 pm
  • Wednesday, April  16, 9:00 am to 9:00 pm

The UPEI Student Union (UPEISU) is partnering with both the Canadian Alliance of Student Association on its GetOutTheVote campaign and New Majority’s campaign to activate student and youth voters. New Majority is a nonpartisan organization that uses peer-led approaches to get young people to the polls.

In an interview with Louise Martin of CBC News: Compass on April 14, Shreesh Agrawal, UPEISU Vice-President External, explained that New Majority has hired student canvassers to mobilize young voters, during a time when many students are writing exams.

“This partnership is allowing us to connect face-to-face with as many students as possible,” said Agrawal. “We’re in the exam season right now and there’s really barely anyone on campus. It can be difficult to engage with students. The benefit of having these canvassers is that they can speak to as many youth as possible on- and off-campus, and in public areas such as bus stops.”

Agrawal indicated on Compass that the Student Union has gathered over 400 pledges to vote from students, which represents over 10% of eligible student voters at UPEI. He anticipates this number will go up significantly in the last two remaining weeks before election day. Students with questions about how to vote may email Shreesh Agrawal, Vice-President External, at vpexternal@upei.ca
