$67,847 to $74,483 per annum, as per CUPE 1870 (effective May 1, 2025)

The Department of Biology invites applications for the position of Laboratory Technologist. This position provides a wide variety of technical support services to the Department of Biology with a focus on equipment oversight, ordering of lab supplies and equipment, as well as lab instructor/teaching assistant payroll verification. This is a fast-paced, multitasking environment with a high volume of traffic. The successful candidate will be adaptable and possess a high degree of initiative and troubleshooting capabilities.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
 

  • Track budget for general maintenance, equipment maintenance, lab supplies, teaching assistants, lab instructors, equipment, fleet maintenance
  • Approve payroll submission for lab instructors and teaching assistants
  • Liaise with facilities management regarding building operations, work orders, and repairs
  • Maintain accurate ethanol dispensing records and organize the disposal of hazardous waste materials
  • Coordinate the purchase of lab supplies and equipment
  • Provide basic IT troubleshooting and coordinate with IT services and support as needed
  • Manage department vehicles and other field equipment as well as updating of approved users
  • Coordinate departmental transportation to field sites in collaboration with course instructors
  • Work with Chair to update building emergency plan
  • Act as ‘on call’ contact for equipment alarms and building specific issues
  • Other technical support duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS: 
 

  • B.Sc. in Biology or equivalent
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment
  • Knowledge of UPEI and its operations would be an asset
  • Ability to operate various pieces of equipment and troubleshoot as needed (autoclave, water distiller, media dispenser, dishwasher, growth chambers, refrigeration units and other standard laboratory apparatus)
