MHW 2018: Let's Listen

The event will wrap up MHW 2018, featuring a safe-listening and non-judgmental environment where various students, faculty, and staff members will share their stories and encounters with mental illness. These stories will provide us with an opportunity to learn, care, and be inspired to help ourselves and those around us living with mental illnesses, and remind us all, that relationships matter. Pub grub, kindly provided by the UPEI Student Union. All are welcome to attend!

Title: Light at Heart - Fiber optics from laboratory to market Presenter: Prof. Caroline Boudoux Department of Engineering Physics Ecole Polytechnique Montréal Abstract: Endoscopy has changed modern medicine by allowing physicians to explore inner organs with minimal trauma. Single optical fiber endoscopes offer the potential to further increase patient comfort and increase access to remote organs through miniaturization. Current research focuses on sub-millimeter endoscopy using dedicated optical fibers for imaging large volumes of tissue. One such fiber - the double clad fiber - allows many imaging modalities to be performed simultaneously for greater diagnostic sensitivity and specificity. Double-clad fiber couplers combine the properties of single-mode fiber light delivery with the high collection efficiency provided by multimode fibers. They are used in multiple sensing and imaging applications including surface plasmon resonance, optical coherence tomography, confocal and nonlinear microscopy. Recent work from our laboratory allowed increasing their performance to quasi-lossless transmission through the single-mode core combined with >85% transfer efficiency of multimode light. This presentation will focus on novel double-clad fiber coupler designs as well as on the brief history of their commercialization. Biography: Associate professor & rookie entrepreneur, Prof. Boudoux obtained her PhD from the Harvard-MIT Health Sciences and Technology program (USA) in biomedical optics in 2007. She then completed a post-doctoral fellowship at Ecole Polytechnique (France) on coherent control applied to nonlinear microscopy before launching her laboratory at Ecole Polytechnique Montreal (Canada). Her research topics range from laser-tissue interactions, to novel hardware, such as lasers and fiber optics couplers, for imaging. These couplers are used in medical institutions worldwide, in applications ranging from optical coherence tomography (OCT) and confocal micro-endoscopy imaging to laser coagulation. With a colleague, she founded Castor Optics Inc., a spin-off company commercializing a new line of double-clad fibers couplers in a strategic partnership with Thorlabs Inc. She is the author of Fundamentals of Biomedical Optics, a comprehensive textbook for senior undergraduate and graduate students, as well as of another textbook, written in French, on Engineering Design. She has won several teaching and research awards, including a Fulbright fellowship in 2015 to spend a sabbatical year at Stanford University. The 2018 CAP National Lecture Series is brought to you by the Canadian Association of Physicists - www.cap.ca and is hosted by the UPEI Department of Physics.

Go Code Girl Day at the School of Sustainable Design Engineering

Calling all girls in grades 7-10! Go CODE Girl Day is a hands-on opportunity for girls in Grades 7 to 10 to learn about the exciting world of computer programming and software development. AVC presents workshop on managing digestive issues in horses

Dr. Martha Mellish, of AVC’s Equine Ambulatory Service, will give a free public workshop, entitled “A pain in the gut: Managing equine digestive issues,” on Wednesday, March 21, at 7 p.m., in Lecture Theatre A, Atlantic Veterinary College, UPEI. Horses have complex gastro-intestinal systems and can have equally complex digestive problems. The more knowledge horse owners have about these issues, the better they can understand and appropriately manage digestive conditions affecting their animals. Using a practical model, Dr. Mellish will explain the equine gastro-intestinal tract and talk about common medical conditions that can affect it. Everyone is welcome. Admission is free, and refreshments will be served. For information, contact (902) 566-0589.

North of 49 Films Presents: Perfume War

**RE-SCHEDULED DUE TO WEATHER** Free snacks and free Samuel's coffee & muffin voucher at this screening! Perfume War is an inspiring documentary about two friends and their unstoppable fight for world peace. Captain Trevor Greene’s mission in Afghanistan ends violently with a Taliban axe in his head. Miraculously, he survives to see his best friend Barb Stegemann, a single mom, carry on his peace mission with a new strategy – perfume. In an Art of War maneuver, she takes what the enemy loves most, the poppy crop, by purchasing rose and orange blossom oils, which pay Afghan farmers twice the income over illegal poppy. Scientists marvel at Greene’s recovery as he rebuilds his brain, while Stegemann helps rebuild in Afghanistan and Rwanda. Barb fights a retail war in stores while working to keep her company financially afloat. In a world that monetizes war, Barb needs a cavalry of business to take up her retail activist charge. A global beauty giant shows interest, but is her essential oil good enough? Will she run out of money? Will she win her perfume war? Located in the Campus Life Lounge, which is in Student Affairs (above the bookstore).
