The School encourages members of the campus community to attend the public presentations as per the following schedule: Dr. Soheil Shahidinejad – Tuesday, May 5, 2:45-3:45 pm, McDougall Hall Room 246 Sustainable Smart Cities - A Design Approach Dr. Shahidinejad is an academic and professional mechanical engineer with over 14 years of experience. He is currently serving as Director of Mechanical Department at Samson Engineering Inc. His industry experience as a design engineer, project engineer, and engineering manager spans three different areas: Sustainable power generation, oil and gas, and buildings. His academic research contribution has been mainly in the areas of sustainable energy, smart transportation and turbulent flows. Dr Shahidinejad received the BSc, MSc and PhD (with honors) degrees from Sharif University of Technology, Tehran, Iran in 1993, 1996 and 2002; respectively. He is a registered Professional Engineer in the provinces of Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

The School encourages members of the campus community to attend the public presentations as per the following schedule: Professor Libby Osgood – Wed, May 6, 2:45-3:45 pm, McDougall Hall Room 246 The Spectrum of Active Learning in Engineering Education Libby Osgood, P Eng, is an Assistant Professor at UPEI and studies design methodologies and engineering education pedagogies, specifically service-learning. She worked in industry as a systems engineer and was on the design team for two NASA Goddard satellites: LDCM and FERMI. She received her Masters of Science in Aerospace Engineering from Texas A&M University, focusing on attitude, dynamics, and control. She is a PhD candidate at Dalhousie University in Mechanical Engineering

The School encourages members of the campus community to attend the public presentations as per the following schedule: Dr. Kristin Domike – Thurs, May 7, 2:45-3:45 pm, McDougall Hall Room 246 Cases in Design Engineering Dr. Kristin Domike has an established track record of excellence in the area of design engineering. This excellence includes academic accomplishments, practical implementation, and interactive teaching/mentoring. Dr. Domike has previously taught at UPEI and for two years at a university in Ohio. Dr. Domike completed her PhD in Physics at the University of Cambridge (Cavendish Laboratories) with research focused on protein aggregation (relevant to brain diseases and food manufacturing). She completed undergraduate and master’s degrees in Material Science & Engineering at MIT, working on designs and materials for use in medical tubing devices including commercialization. Dr. Domike has five peer-reviewed articles of significance and presented at many conferences.

The School encourages members of the campus community to attend the public presentations as per the following schedule: Dr. Fidel Khouli – Fri, May 8, 2:45-3:45 pm, McDougall Hall Room 243 Design Evolution, Testing and Certification of an Ultra-Long Range Business Jet: Structural Dynamics and Aeroservoelasticity Perspective Dr. Fidel Khouli obtained his PhD in Aerospace Engineering from Carleton University and his MEng and BEng from the University of Toronto and McMaster University respectively. In June, 2009, he joined Bombardier Aerospace as one of the lead engineers in Core Engineering - Structural Dynamics and Aeroelasticity Group to work on the design and the development of the Ultra-Long Range Business Jets the Global 7000 and 8000, a position which he still holds. Presently, he is also a part-time faculty member at Concordia University, Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering where he teaches graduate courses in Helicopter Flight Dynamics and Fixed-Wing Flight Performance. He has several publications in prestigious technical engineering journals. His research interests are in applied mechanics, adaptive structures, smart materials and mechatronics with emphasis on applications to aerospace and maritime engineering systems in the harsh environment of the Arctic.

Echo Lau, a recent Alumna of the UPEI Music Department, returns from Ottawa to present a solo piano recital at the Dr. Steel Recital Hall, UPEI Campus, on Saturday evening, 7:30 pm, May 16. Tickets will be available at the door: $15 adults, $10 seniors and students. Echo Lau, a native of Hong Kong, immigrated to Canada in 2004. During her school years she studied piano with Frances McBurnie and went on to the University of Prince Edward Island where she completed a Bachelor of Music degree in 2013 studying with piano professor, Dr. Frances Gray. Echo has represented PEI at the CFMTA National Piano Competition and several times at the National Music Festival after being the recipient of many top awards for performances in the Queen's County and PEI Provincial Music Festivals. She performed the Ravel Piano Concerto with the PEI Symphony Orchestra as the winner of the Suzanne Brenton Award. Echo often accompanies other musicians and has played for the UPEI Choir and as chief musician for some Kings Playhouse productions. In addition to her piano performances she has also played violin with the PEI Symphony, the Singing Strings, and the Strathgartney Chamber Orchestra. In September 2014 Echo received a generous two-year scholarship from the University of Ottawa to pursue the Master of Music degree in Piano Performance, At present she studies piano there with Professor Andrew Tunis and accompanies the Calixa-Lavallée Choir.

Canadian Catholic Campus Ministers host an annual lecture named for their first Episcopal Liaison, Bishop John Sherlock. The 2015 Sherlock Lecture speaker is Jesuit Brother Guy Consolmagno SJ, Vatican Astronomer. The lecture will be Thursday May 28 2015 at 7:00 pm in the UPEI Duffy Ampitheatre, on campus. Admission will be by free-will offering to support Brother Guy’s work at The Vatican Observatory. Thursday’s lecture "At the Margins of the Universe: The Vatican's Astronomical Observatory" will include why the Vatican supports an observatory and how we do outreach to people on the margins who also hunger to know about their place in the universe. Brother Guy Consolmagno SJ, the President of the Vatican Observatory Foundation. A Jesuit brother and astronomer at the Vatican Observatory, his research is in meteorites and asteroids. He is a native of Detroit, Michigan, received BA and MA degrees from MIT, and earned his PhD in Planetary Sciences from the University of Arizona in 1978. Along with more than 200 scientific publications, he is the author of six popular astronomy books. In 2014 he received the Carl Sagan Medal from the American Astronomical Society Division for Planetary Sciences for excellence in public communication in planetary sciences.
